Money is not an issue. I love my 2003 golf, never had any problems (aside from headlights/taillights going out relatively frequently). It has 160k miles on it, and I intend to push itt to a million, dropping whatever I need in it to make it last.
You don't need a weight reduction. Unless you plan on making it more of a track car. Just get some nice coilovers and some antisway bars and you'll swear you're driving a new car.
The 1.8t is by far the most easily and cheapest VW motor
