Why does my brakes squeek and need brake pad and shoes replaced?

brakes were squeeking some of the time, and the mechanic said it's damaged and that the front brake pads, shoes, and brake fluid needed to be replaced. Cost me $340. I have a fairly new 2005 Camry with 34,000 miles. Should the brakes wear out so quickly
