Can I use any used Nextel or Boost Mobile phone with a Boost Mobile starter kit?

I know there's a list on Boost's site that tells you what phones you can use, but do they have to be brand new, unlocked, or could they be previously used on Nextel?
If you can unlock that old phone, I guess so.
Usually, you can go to a Boost Mobile store and find used phones.
