How do you change a 1996 ford explorer exterior door handle?

I have a 1996 ford explorer sport and the exterior door handle quit working. My boyfriend is going to change it, and he's got it loose. The only thing holding the handle in now is the clip. He can't figure out how to get that out. He said the rod is in

The clip is plastic. Have him look for the OPEN end on the rod.
